Portugal at a Glance
I’ve spent time in Portugal myself and book it often for clients — and it continues to be one of my most-recommended European destinations thanks to its beauty, ease of travel, and incredible value. Portugal is one of those destinations that truly has it all.️
How Long to Stay
About 10 days is the perfect amount of time to explore Portugal on a first visit — allowing you to experience the highlights without feeling rushed. That said, longer stays are fantastic if you want to slow the pace and really soak it all in.
️Best Times to Visit
• Spring (March–April): Gorgeous weather with fewer crowds — ideal for exploring cities, vineyards, and coastlines.
• Summer (July–October): Warm beach weather, especially in the Algarve, but expect crowds and higher prices.
• Winter (Nov–March): Great budget rates and quieter towns — though cooler and rainier, perfect for city and food trips.
️Where to Stay
• Lisbon – Portugal’s capital known for character filled neighborhoods, historic trams, and exceptional food. It’s fantastic year-round, though summer brings heavier crowds and more activity in the historic center.
• Porto – A picturesque riverside city filled with historic architecture and famous for its port wine. It’s popular in peak season but generally feels more relaxed than Lisbon.
• Douro Valley – One of Portugal’s most beautiful wine regions, offering incredible landscapes and vineyard estates. For a quieter experience, visit outside the September/October harvest period.
• Algarve – Loved for its golden beaches and warm waters, especially from July to October. While areas like Lagos can feel touristy, especially in peak season — it’s also a fantastic base for exploring the Algarve. It blends old-world charm with modern comforts, offers great restaurants and activities, and provides easy access to smaller whitewashed villages and quieter coastal spots nearby.
• Alentejo – Rolling countryside, whitewashed villages, and a slower pace of life. This region is ideal for travelers seeking authenticity and fewer crowds.
️Want to Extend your Trip?
Portugal pairs beautifully with:
• The Azores and/or Madeira for dramatic landscapes, hiking, and nature before heading home
• Spain and/or Morocco for an unforgettable multi-country itinerary that blends cultures, cuisine, and history seamlessly
️How to Experience It Best
Base yourself in key locations and day-trip or tour to nearby towns, or rent a car to drive between regions, stopping in charming villages and scenic spots along the way. Prefer not to drive? I also arrange trusted private transfers, which can include curated stops so you don’t miss the hidden gems.
️Stress-free Ways to See Portugal
For travelers who want to unpack once and enjoy the journey, river cruises (especially in the Douro Valley) and escorted tours are wonderful ways to experience Portugal without worrying about transportation or planning details.
