Embarking on a journey through Europe is a dream for many, and there's no better way to experience the charm of the continent than by exploring its picturesque cities. In this blog post, I'll take you on a journey through one of my favourite European itineraries. Paris, Bruges, and Haarlem, three gems that showcase the sophistication, charm, and beauty of Europe.

Day 1-4: Paris, the City of Love

Start your journey in the enchanting city of Paris. Paris, often hailed as the most beautiful city in the world, effortlessly captivates visitors with its timeless charm and romantic allure. The iconic silhouette of the Eiffel Tower against the Parisian skyline, cobblestone streets adorned with chic boutiques, charming cafes tucked away in hidden corners, and the enchanting Seine River winding through the heart of the city complete the picturesque tableau. Paris effortlessly resonates sophistication as an enduring symbol of elegance and aesthetic perfection. The City of Love stands as a testament to art, culture, and architectural grandeur.

Some of my favourite ways to spend my time in Paris include indulging in the iconic Macarons from Ladurée on the Champs-Élysées, spending an afternoon relaxing in Le Jardin des Tuileries with wine and some accompaniment (bring your own wine and pairings), enjoying an evening meandering the streets of the Montmartre, or watching a ballet at l’Opera Garnier, and admiring the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower at night. But no trip to Paris is complete without fully immersing yourself in the delightful world of French cafés. My go to area to embrace the café culture in the historic and artistic quarter of Saint-Germain-des-Prés on the Left Bank.

Day 5-7: Bruges, the Fairytale City

Board a train to Bruges, a medieval city that seems straight out of a fairytale. Bruges, often referred to as the "Venice of the North," is a city that exudes an enchanting charm with cobblestone streets and canals complete with swans, making it a truly magical destination.

The canals of Bruges weave through the medieval city like liquid ribbons, reflecting centuries-old architecture that seems to rise directly from the water's edge. The sight of graceful swans gliding along these canals adds an ethereal quality to the experience. These elegant birds are not just a picturesque addition but are also symbolic of the city's tranquility and grace. The medieval architecture, with its stepped gables and cobblestone streets, transports visitors back in time, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere. The Markt square, surrounded by stunning guild houses, is a bustling hub where horse-drawn carriages clatter over cobblestones, enhancing the old-world charm. Every visit to Bruges must include indulging in culinary delights like Belgian chocolates, waffles, Moules et frites (Mussels & Fries), and most importantly Belgian ales!

Day 8-:10 Haarlem, the Floral Paradise

Hop on another short train ride to Haarlem, a hidden gem in the Netherlands known for its historic charm, cultural richness, and vibrant flower markets. Haarlem is perfectly situated as your gateway to the renowned Dutch flower fields, and in the springtime, it transforms into a kaleidoscope of colors as the tulips bloom in abundance. Keukenhof Gardens, often dubbed the "Garden of Europe," is a short distance from Haarlem and is home to millions of tulips in various hues. The city becomes a gateway to this floral paradise, attracting visitors from around the world who come to witness the breathtaking spectacle of vibrant tulip fields stretching as far as the eye can see.

Beyond the tulip fields, Haarlem's historic grandeur is evident in its well-preserved architecture, demonstrated by landmarks such as the Grote Kerk (Great Church) and the Teylers Museum, the oldest museum in the Netherlands. Haarlem's culinary scene is a mix of traditional Dutch fare and innovative cuisine. With an abundance of inviting cafes and restaurants, you can savor local specialties while enjoying the relaxed pace of life. What sets Haarlem apart is its accessibility, its intimate atmosphere, and its ability to offer a peaceful retreat from the bustling pace of larger cities like Amsterdam. My ideal way to spend my time in Haarlem is to simply unwind and enjoy the local cuisine, pub scene, and picturesque countryside.
